As we begin the long July 4th celebration, we have much to be thankful for. One of the most important things we, as Americans, share is the Bill of Rights. This singular document enshrines a vast array of freedoms for America and its people. Nowhere on earth, that I’m aware of, are these rights guaranteed to all. The main tenet is the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

I believe these inalienable rights, as they are called, guarantee us all the ability to make many choices without coercion from the government. These are incredibly important rights that, as we know, are not available to a large percentage of the world’s population. The citizens of China, India, Iran, and North Korea, just to name a few, live in countries where the citizenry enjoys little or no personal liberty. We, as Americans and free people all over the world, should not and cannot ever take these rights for granted.

I would argue vehemently, however, that true freedom starts from within. We are confronted with a million choices each and every day. How we choose ultimately dictates how free we truly are. Do we choose to be healthy if given the chance, or do we choose to make poor decisions that sabotage our quality of life? Do we choose to always play it safe and never take a chance to grow? Do we choose to be a little uncomfortable in order to grow, or do we choose to remain comfortable? Do we choose to be true to ourselves and listen to our inner voice, or do we choose to listen to other people and let them make our choices for us?

As we celebrate the 4th, let’s choose to take advantage of the inalienable rights that have been bestowed upon all Americans and honor this great nation in the best way possible. Become the best version of yourself!
